Intent

We want pupils at Daven Primary School to have the  knowledge and skills needed so that they know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way, feeling prepared for life and work in modern Britain. We believe that when taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

The Jigsaw curriculum holds children at its heart and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. It has a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.

Implementation

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of learning as part of our PSHE offer. Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (known as puzzles), each containing six lessons (referred to as the 'pieces') covering each academic year.

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Session are planned, resourced and delivered whilst being mindful of a variety of learning styles including creative and visual approaches to allow accessibility and adaptability for all learners. Medium-term plans for each year group, are carefully structured to adapt the sessions to the areas of need for the pupils at our school, as well as ensuring curriculum coverage.

At the bottom of this page, you can find the progression maps for each puzzle: from Early Years to Year 6.

Through the successful implementation of our PSHE curriculum, our children become empowered by their own sense of identity and individuality. They will be able to listen to and understand the views and beliefs of others, building positive relationships with all despite their differences. As an inclusive school, our teachers are confident to tackle and explore difficult situations, using positive language to create a sense of belonging for all.

To enhance our PSHE curriculum, we utilise No Outsiders resources. The vision for No Outsiders is: Inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens. At Daven Primary School, we want our pupils to 'take on the world'. In order to do this successfully, they need to understand the world around them.

We have aligned No Outsiders texts to the Jigsaw units of learning to enhance learning.

In May 2024, Daven Primary School was awarded with Rights Respecting Schools Bronze Award. This means that as a school we are committe to putting children's rights at the heart of school and committed to creating safe and inspiring places to learn. We are committed to making Daven Primary School a place where children are respected, talents are nutured and our learners can thrive.

Our PSHE LTP maps out how the units of learning link to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In addition to the PSHE curriculum, we have Rights Respecting Ambassadors, assemblies throughout the year to teach children about their rights, and many more activities.
